Life story

Life story

Charles was born in Framlingham, Suffolk, the son of Sarah Lambert and probably George Butcher. He was baptised at Framlingham on 3rd January 1858. Sarah married George in 1862. Charles moved to London as a young man and trained as a tailor. On 29th June 1879, he married Ellen Quickenden at St Paul's Church, Deptford. The couple set up home in St Pancras where their daughter Margaret was born in 1880. By 1891, the family were living in Lewisham and Charles was running his own business. After Margaret, they had five more children, Ethel, Alice, Minnie, Dorothy, and John Stanley. By 1911, the family had moved to Catford where they lived until 1924. Charles and Ellen moved to Worthing, living at "St Margaret's" 29 Wordsworth Road. Ellen died here on 5th January 1930. Charles died on 3rd December the same year. Probate was granted on 24th January 1931 to Lloyds Bank Ltd. Effects £8372 1s. Although not buried at Heene, John Stanley is remembered on the gravestone. He was born in Lewisham on 2nd June 1899 and died on 5th June 1932 at Waddon in Surrey. Between 1917 and 1919, John served with the Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve, London Division. In 1924, he married Ethel Lilian Barrett at Lewisham. Their daughter June was born in 1925. John died at 53 Stafford Road, Waddon. Charles died 3rd December 1930 leaving effects of £8372.1s.
