Life story

Edgar Dudley was born on 27th January 1866, he was baptised on 26th February at St. Mary's, Islington. His father, Samuel Dudley, a Meat Salesman, and his mother, Catherine Dudley, lived at Minerva Place, Islington. He was privately educated and in 1881, aged 15yrs, he was a scholar at Cranford College, Berkshire. Edgar qualified as a surveyor and joined the War Office as a Land Agent. He later became a Local Government Board Inspector and an Inspector for the Ministry of Health. In 1901 Edgar was living as a Boarder in Plymouth, Devon,

In 1903, Edgar, aged 37yrs, married Marie Kate Chrestien, 23yrs, at Heene, on 13th September. They moved to Copseham Rise, Oxshott, Surrey and had 2 children, Jack Frederick, 1908, and Honor, 1911. Edgar's employment as a government inspector required him to attend local government inquiries all over the country relating to land purchase, building development and all types of council business. He was a successful, influential and wealthy man, employing a butler along with other household servants; he and Marie Kate continued to live at Copseham Rise until his death on 4th October 1939.

Probate was granted to Marie Kate Dudley, widow, Jack Dudley, chartered accountant, and Montague Piesse, solicitor. Effects - £42,394 17s 5d.  Value 2020 - £2.8m.

Obituary

The funeral of Mr. Edgar Dudley, of Copseham Rise, Oxshott, chief ranger of Oxshott Heath, whose death, at the age of 73, was reported in last week’s Surrey Advertiser, took place on Friday last week. Cremation at Woking was preceded by a service at St. Andrew’s Church, Oxshott, conducted by the Vicar (the Rev. T.J.C. Ford). The organist was Mr. P. Dean, and family mourners included Mrs. Dudley, (widow), Mr. Jack Dudley (son), Mr. and Mrs. Stainer (son-in-law and daughter), Col. and Mrs. Kent and Mr. and Mrs. Chrestian (brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law), Miss Hammond (niece), Mrs. Gillman, Mr. Gillman, and Mr. and Mrs. Pieffe. There were over 40 wreaths.
