Life story

Edith Isabelle Firth was born on 17th October 1860, she was baptised at St. Mary Magdalene, Richmond, Surrey, on 11th September 1860. She was the daughter of Alfred William Firth, 24yrs, a colonial broker, and Elizabeth, 27yrs, nee Ward; Edith had 3 siblings, Emily b.1859, Frances b. 1862, and Arthur b.1868.

On 8th September 1887 Edith married Edward Benjamin Crabb, an accountant's clerk, at Holy Trinity, Tulse Hill, Wandsworth, they were both 26yrs of age. They moved to Sevenoaks, Kent, where they had 3 children, Cyril b.1892, Doris b.1896, and Herbert b.1897. In 1901 the family was living in Coulsdon, Surrey, Edward was now a chartered accountant working at 52, Cannon Street, EC.

Edith was widowed in 1902 when Edward died, aged 41yrs, from tuberculosis at Harrow Road, Worthing, Sussex. In 1911 Edith and her 3 teenage children were living in Worthing at Kippington, Browning Road.

At some point, Edith moved to Hampshire where her son Cyril, a farmer, was living, and she died on 4th August 1918, aged 57yrs, at Fir Trees, Fair Oak, Hampshire. Probate was granted to Cyril Edward Crabb, farmer, and Doris Edith Crabb, spinster, effects, £2235 5s 9d. Value 2022 - £141,000.
