Her mother was Olivia Mirabella Dowleans. Edith was born in Islington but two of her siblings were born in India. Her siblings were: Alexander Fleming Hewett (18641865) born in India, Arthur Fitzwilliam Hewett 18671870, Eleanor Katherine Hewett (1869-1908) born in Bengal and Arthur Stanley Hewett (18711929). She became a teacher of deaf teachers having founded the Eaton College for the Training of Deaf Teachers in Ealing. She later co-founded a school for deaf children and adults in Bournemouth with her friend Nora Pirrie. She died on 25 July 1952 at the age of 86.
