Life story

Life story

Elizabeth was the daughter of James Cooper, a labourer and his wife Louisa nee Boxall. She was baptised on 7th January 1855 at Egdean by the rector James Rutherford. She appears in the 1861 census in the household of William Cooper, her uncle, and his wife Eliza, as niece and scholar. She appears with William again in 1871. He had remarried after Eliza's death. His second wife, widow Caroline Dudman had two children who he called "his wife's son and daughter". It seems that Elizabeth was taken in by William because her mother Louisa had died aged 26 when Elizabeth was only 4 or 5. Elizabeth married Robert Blunden, a domestic gardener, in 1877 and had three children. By 1881, they were living in Wick Street, Lyminster but by 1891, they had moved to Weeke in Hampshire. By 1901 they were living in Worthing at 63 The Drive, Heene where they remained until at least 1921. By the time of the 1939 Register, Elizabeth was a widow and an invalid, living with her daughter Lilly, who was married to Ernest Stickland. He was a tobacconist's assistant and the family lived at 106 Broomfield Avenue, Worthing. Elizabeth died on 31st December 1939. No probate.
