Life story

Life story

Ernest Stephen Trooper Haylor was also known as Stephen. He was born in Heene, the son of George and Elizabeth. Ernest was baptised at Heene on 10th June 1849. The family lived in Heene Lane and George worked on one of the local farms. In 1864, Stephen as he was known, was apprenticed to Robert Penny of Southwick to work on board a boat called the "Cleo" out of Shoreham. By 1881, Stephen was master of a fishing boat "Stonewall Jackson". His brother Eli worked with him. Stephen never married and died at home in Heene on 2nd March 1886. There is no address given on the death certificate but it may be that he died at his brother Eli's home at 9 Surrey Street. Eli was present at Stephen's death. Probate was granted on 18th March 1886 to George Haylor, gardener, father and next of kin. Effects £279.
