Life story

Life story

Gertrude was born in Ipswich, Suffolk, the daughter of James and Alice nee Dunmill. Her father was a baker and the family lived in Wingfield Street. She was baptised at St Stephen's Church, Ipswich on 15 Sep 1872. Gertrude was sent to live with the Rev. Edward James Rogers by the time she was 8. Rev. Rogers was Vicar of Thames Ditton in Surrey. Her aunt Jane Dunmill was his housekeeper and also the sister of Gertrude's mother. By 1901, the household had moved to Worthing, settling at Foxley Lodge in Rowlands Road. The reverend died on 28 Jan 1910. Jane Dunmill died in 1924 and was buried at Heene. Gertrude moved to a flat at 74 Rowlands Road. She took in lodgers during the 2nd World War. Gertrude later moved to Findon, living at "Sandena" in Steep Hill. She died on 5 May 1963.
