Life story

Life story

Horace was born in Patching, Sussex, the son of Henry and Mary Ann. He was baptised at Patching on 31st July 1842. Henry was a shoemaker and the family lived at Fox Hill. Horace was apprenticed to a wheelwright as a young man. On 10th June 1867, Horace married Matilda Elizabeth Bennett at St Nicholas church, Brighton. The couple moved to Worthing, living in Montague Street. Their daughter Kate was born in 1873 with a spinal defect. She died in 1891, 3 months before her 19th birthday. By 1881, the family had moved to Brunswick Road and Horace was now working as a carpenter. The family moved again before 1891 to Linden Cottage in Milton Road. Horace died at Linden Cottage on 4th January 1910. Probate was granted on 21st August to Matilda Elizabeth Potten widow and Benjamin Haslett hire carter. Effects £698 0s 6d. Re-sworn £648 0s 6d.
