Life story

Life story

James was born in Hastings, the son of James and Priscilla nee Veale. His family were boatbuilders and shipwrights. James was baptised at St Mary in the Castle church, Hastings on 18th September 1828. The three eldest boys all worked in the business as young men. On 25th December 1853, James married Ellen Saxby in Battle. The couple moved to Worthing, living in Brunswick Road which was known as "Little Heene". They had two children, William James and Harry. James set up business in a boatyard on Marine Parade employing several men and boys. He was also a lifeboatman and took part in the regattas, sailing his boat "The Seagull" and winning many races. In 1865, Ellen died. She was buried at West Tarring on 21st January. On 20th August the following year, James married Ellen's sister Mary Jane. Four more children were added to the family, Ellen, Percy, Lizzie and Charles. Only William James followed his father into the boat building business. Both Percy and Charles became licensed victuallers and moved to London. Mary died on 30th April 1884 and was buried at Heene. In February 1888, James sold his business, part of which became the new lifeboat station. James seems to have moved between his daughter Ellen's family in Milton Street, Worthing and his son's pubs in Lewisham and Catford. He died on 22nd September 1904 at the Salisbury Hotel, Lewisham which was run by his son Charles. James's address was given as "Tiger's Head" in Bromley Road, Catford, the home of his son Percy.  Probate was granted on 26th October to Percy and Charles Hutchinson, licensed victuallers. Effects £120.

Miscellaneous information

Worthing Gazette 6 March 1907

"excerpt from article on modern boat building"

Nineteen years ago the irresistible advance of the enterprising builder deprived the seafront of one of its most picturesque objects. That was the yard in which the late Mr James Hutchinson carried on for so many years, the art of the boat builder, and the curious in such matters would linger a while to see the busy workmen deftly fashioning the craft that were presently to disport themselves upon the ocean. On the closing day of February 1888, the site of this particular form of enterprise was publicly sold by auction by Mr E C Patching. The land comprised in the sale being the only available spot for building operations in those days westward between the Pier and Heene Terrace. Now the Lifeboat House is seen covering a portion of the ground. But the process of boat building is by no means locally extinct, for the late Mr John Belton who served his apprenticeship with Mr Hutchinson commenced business on his own account at a yard in Alfred Place about thirty years ago. Then he transferred the scene of his daily operations to more convenient premises in Library Place where he remained until his death in November last.
