"excerpt from article on modern boat building"
Nineteen years ago the irresistible advance of the enterprising builder deprived the seafront of one of its most picturesque objects. That was the yard in which the late Mr James Hutchinson carried on for so many years, the art of the boat builder, and the curious in such matters would linger a while to see the busy workmen deftly fashioning the craft that were presently to disport themselves upon the ocean. On the closing day of February 1888, the site of this particular form of enterprise was publicly sold by auction by Mr E C Patching. The land comprised in the sale being the only available spot for building operations in those days westward between the Pier and Heene Terrace. Now the Lifeboat House is seen covering a portion of the ground. But the process of boat building is by no means locally extinct, for the late Mr John Belton who served his apprenticeship with Mr Hutchinson commenced business on his own account at a yard in Alfred Place about thirty years ago. Then he transferred the scene of his daily operations to more convenient premises in Library Place where he remained until his death in November last.
