Life story

Life story

John Haines (aka Haynes) was born in Madeley, Herefordshire, in 1845, his parents were John Haynes, 26yrs, an agricultural labourer, and Mary, 25yrs. John had 2 younger sisters, Jane b.1847, and Catherine b.1850, the family lived in Kings Pyon, Herefordshire. At 15yrs old, John was employed as a carter on a local farm.

On 20th April 1869, John married Mary Anne Horton, at Kings Pyon, they had 4 daughters, Alice b.1870, Amy b.1873, Agnes b.1876, and Mabel b.1886, born with curvature of the spine.

In 1881, John was an agricultural labourer and waggoner, and the family lived in Sherbourne, Warwickshire, for many years, in 1901 they were living in Wellesbourne, Warwickshire.

By 1911 they had moved south to Worthing, Sussex, where John was a fruit grower and gardener, living in the Bungalow, Lansdowne Road. Mabel was the only daughter remaining at home, helping her father in the nursery, but in 1913 she died, aged 27yrs, from influenza and cardiac failure.

In 1916 John was widowed when Mary Ann died, aged 69yrs. Three years later, on 29th May 1919, John also died, aged 74yrs, probate was granted to Raymond Wells, solicitor's clerk, effects, £343 3s 7d. Value 2023 - £22,660.
