Life story

Lucie Charlotte Sergeant was born on 1st October 1865 at Tottenham, London, to Frederick, 36yrs, Silk Finisher, and Mary Sergeant, 19yrs. In 1871, Lucie, now 5yrs old, was the eldest of four siblings, Frederick, 3yrs, Blanche, 2yrs, and Percy 1yr. In 1887, aged 22yrs, Lucie married Montague Neale Mellersh, 23yrs, on 13th July, at St. Matthew's, Redhill, Surrey. Montague owned a Brewery in Reigate, they lived at 2, Ringley Cottages, Blackborough Road and had three children, Dorothy 1886, Ida 1889 and Oswald 1892. In 1900 the family lived at 56, Chart Road, Reigate, but by 1901 they had moved to Worthing and lived at Puckaster, Grand Avenue. Lucie was widowed in 1905 when she was 40yrs old, and she took over her husband's dairy business, describing herself as Dairy Proprietress in 1911, assisted by her daughter, Ida, 21yrs, now living at Shirley, Heene Road, Worthing. In 1939, Lucie, 74yrs, lived at 31, St. Thomas's Road, Worthing, with her widowed daughter, Ida, 50yrs. Lucie died in 1947, aged 82yrs.
