Life story

Life story

Mary Tufnell was born in Chelmsford, Essex on 29th July 1811, she was baptised on 1st September 1811 at Great Waltham. Mary was the daughter of William Bewly Tufnell and Frances, nee Millner, she had 6 siblings, George b.1808, Julia b.1810, Frances b.1813, Louisa b.1816, and Caroline and William both born 1820.

Mary's ancestral home was Langleys, one of the finest houses in Essex, (see below) and her ancestor, John Joliffe Tufnell, MP, (d.1794) a country gentleman, was thought to be one of the most wealthy commoners in England, with his land rents alone earning over £3 million pounds yearly at today's values.

Mary married, aged 27yrs, on 20th November 1838, in Horkstow, Lincolnshire, her husband was George Carter, 44yrs, a member of the landed gentry of Kennington Hall, Ashford, Kent. Their daughter, Mary Louisa Carter, was born in 1839 and a son, George William, was born in 1842 in France. Mary was widowed sometime before 1851, her husband probably died abroad.

In 1851, Mary and her young children lived in Canterbury, and in 1861 she was living in Dover with her daughter. Mary's son had joined the Indian Army and in 1866 he sadly died from lung disease, aged 24yrs, in Bangalore.

Mary's daughter married Thomas Holman in 1861 and went on to have 15 children, it was a wealthy household, employing a footman, children's nurses and various domestic staff. Mary, senior, lived with the family for the next 20 years in Eastbourne, Sussex, becoming quite well known in the town.

By 1891, Mary, her daughter, and 9 of her grandchildren, were living in Worthing, Sussex, at 5, Heene Terrace, on the sea front. In 1899, Mary's son-in-law died, and her widowed daughter and 2 unmarried granddaughters continued to reside with Mary.

Mary Carter died on 10th April 1907, at the great age of 95yrs. She left £175 5s 0d. to her daughter, Mary Louisa, £26,000 2023 value.

Langleys

is one of the finest country houses in Essex. A fine early C18 red brick house built on an H-shaped plan and incorporating in the north wing part of an earlier house of circa 1620. It stands in a park of about 100 acres. In 1711 Samuel Tuffnell, MP, flush with new London money, purchased the Langleys Estate from the ancient Essex family of Everard, who were in straightened financial circumstances. Tuffnell paid £5,498 for Langleys, the equivalent of £11 million in 2016 values,  Langleys is one of the few houses in Essex that remains in the ownership of the family that built it.
