Life story

Mary Couch was born in Newhaven, Sussex, in 1863. She was the daughter of James John Couch, 38yrs, Coastguard, and Eliza, 36yrs, nee Julyan. She had 6 sisters, Sarah b.1859, Eliza b.1861, Elizabeth b.1865, Rosa b.1867, Minnie b.1870, and Emily b.1872.

In 1881, aged 17yrs, Mary was an under-parlourmaid at a school in West Mansions, Worthing, but after the death of her mother in 1889, she returned to keep house for her father who was a bathchair proprietor, working from home in Milton Street. James Couch died in 1904 and Mary continued living in Milton Street with her unmarried sister, Rosa.

Mary died on 6th December 1921, aged 58yrs, administration was granted to her sister, Rosa Couch, spinster, effects £417 12s 10d. Value 2022 - £21,700.
