Life story

 Mary was born in Glynde, Sussex, the eldest daughter of the Rev. William de St Croix vicar of the village. William had been recently appointed to the parish and he and his wife Martha lived in the rather grand vicarage.

William was a noted cricketer, having played for Cambridge University. As a young girl, Mary was sent to a private school in Brighton. The school was mainly for young ladies who were daughters of the clergy. On 3rd October 1878, Mary married Robert Henry Russell, a clerk in the City of London Dues Office. The couple lived in Hendon for a while before moving to Reigate. They had no children. After Robert's retirement, they moved to Worthing, living in Browning Road. Robert died on 28th December 1917. Mary moved to Seaford, living at "The Gables" in East Blatchington. She died on 7th April 1926. Probate was granted on 5th May to Francis de St Croix gentleman. Effects £1215 2s.

"Marriage of Miss de St Croix"

On Thursday was solemnised at the Parish Church, the marriage of Mr Robert H Russell, second son of the late Mr W Mozart Russell, of Clapton to Miss Mary E May de St Croix, eldest daughter of the late Rev. W de St Croix of Glynde. Shortly before eleven o’clock, the bridegroom accompanied by his best man, Mr G J Dare arrived at the church where they waited the arrival of the bridal party. The bride, richly attired in an ivory white silk dress with tulle veil and wreath of orange blossoms, looking exceedingly well. She was escorted by Mr J C Lucas, her brother-in-law, and attended by four bridesmaids: Miss A C de St Croix and Miss E M de St Croix (her sisters), and Miss E R Russell and Miss M Russell (sisters of the bridegroom), each carrying a splendid bouquet, a gift from the bridegroom. The wedding guests consisted only of near relatives of the bride and bridegroom viz Mrs de St Croix, Mr F de St Croix, Mrs Lucas, Mr W T H Evans, Mrs Russell, Miss Russell, Miss E K Russell, Miss E M Russell, Mr Walter Russell and Mr W M Russell. The service was read by the Rev. H C de St Croix (uncle of the bride), vicar of Figheldean, Wilts, assisted by Rev. W H Meads Buck, vicar of Seaford. The wedding breakfast to place at the residence of the bride’s mother. The newly married pair departed in the afternoon for Lewes, en route for Buxton where they will spend their honeymoon.
