Life story

Life story

Matilda was born in St Pancras, Middlesex, the daughter of Joseph and Jane Webb. She was baptised at St James Church, Westminster on 10th December 1837. Her father was a painter. On 2nd October, Matilda married George Henry Cornford at St James Church, Westminster. The couple moved to Worthing where George worked as an engineer for the local waterworks. The family lived in Thorn Terrace for many years but by 1901 had moved in with their son Thomas who ran the Eagle Brewery in Montague Street. George and Matilda later lived with their daughter Georgina who had her own business as a dyer and cleaner in Rowlands Road. George died on 5th August 1913. Matilda and Georgina moved a few doors down the road to 2 Burlington Terrace and it was here that Matilda died on 20th April 1918. No probate.
