Life story

Sarah was born to Henry Merritt, a brickmaker and his wife Charlotte nee Poor, in Stockheath, Hampshire in 1828. She was baptised on 8th November 1828 and married George Bowers, a brickmaker, at Alverstoke, Hampshire on 8th September 1851. They had nine children. By 1881, the family had moved to the Brickyard at Heene which was situated at the west end of Tarring Road, south of the railway line at West Worthing. They lived at no. 4 Brickyard, Heene where George Bowers was the brickyard foreman. Next door at no.3 lived the owner of the works George Greenfield who employed 13 men and 9 boys. Two of George Bowers sons also worked at the brickyard. George Greenfield died in 1914 and is buried at Heene in the SWS area Row 7 Plot 13. Sarah Bowers died on 29th March 1885 aged 56. No probate.
