Life story

Life story

Alexander Grant was born in 1859 in Nassau, Bahamas, West Indies, which at that time was a British Crown Colony, and it is very likely that his father was a civil servant of the British Government. As an adult, Alexander had a career, as an engineer, in Punjab, India, where he married Georgiana Elizabeth Dobree and their first son, Alexander, was born in India in 1895.

Although his wife was born in India, her family came from the Channel Islands, and in 1896/97 when Alexander retired from the Indian civil service, they made their home in Jersey, where 2 more children were born, George, 1898, and Emily Constance, 1899.

At some point after 1901, the family moved to Worthing, living at Pelham, St. Botolph's Road, and in 1905, Alexander died, aged just 46yrs, leaving his widow with 3 children under the age of 10yrs. Probate was granted to Georgiana, effects £239 15s 9d. Value 2021 - £30k.
