Life story

Alma Grover was born in Witley, Hampshire, in January 1873; she was the daughter of Albert Grover, 21yrs, Dairyman, and Mary, 22yrs, nee Collier. Alma had 5 sisters, Florence b.1875, Edith b.1877, Mary b.1882, Phoebe b. 1888, and Eliza b.1891. The family moved to Cambridge where Alma spent most of her childhood.

At 19yrs of age, Alma was a housemaid in Yorkshire and in 1901, aged 29yrs, she was a domestic nurse in the household of 90yr old James McManus, plus his wife and family, living at Fulmar House, Heene, Worthing.

In 1902 Alma married Ernest Henry Bridger, a domestic coachman, in Worthing, and they had 3 children, Ernest F. b.1903, Ronald G. b.1906, and Alma Mary b.1910.  They lived in Thorn Road, and in 1911, Ernest was a Cab. Proprietor, and they supplemented their income with 4 boarders.

Ernest was a veteran of the Boer War and in 1914 he joined up again, seeing action in France. After the war the family continued their life, as before, in Thorn Road.

Alma died, on 13th January 1928, aged 55yrs.
