Life story

Life story

Amy Fidler was born in Selsey, Sussex, in 1830, her father was Michael Fidler, 45yrs, Agricultural Labourer, her mother, Sarah, 30yrs, and her older brother, George, 3yrs.

When Amy was 21yrs of age, she was working as a cook in Chichester, at the Globe Inn. On 20th October 1859, Amy married Henry Sopp in Selsey; Henry was a farm labourer working at Almodington, Sidlesham, Sussex, and this was their home for nearly 40yrs. They had 4 daughters, Mary Ann b.1860, Ellen b.1863, Emily b.1865, and Jane b.1868.

In 1901, Henry 67yrs, was still an agricultural labourer, and they lived in East Wittering, with their daughter Ellen. At some point over the next few years, they moved to Worthing where their other 3 daughters lived. Amy was widowed in 1910 when Henry died, aged 76yrs, on 11th April.

The following year, Amy was living with her daughters, Mary Ann, 50yrs, who was keeping a lodging house in Rowlands Road, Worthing, and Ellen and Jane also resident. Amy died, aged 80yrs, on 13th September 1911.
