Annie was born in St Helens, Lancashire, daughter of James and Ellen Bromilow. James was involved in the St Helens Crown Glass Partnership, which devolved eventually into Pilkingtons Glass.

Annie married Italian born, army officer, Edward McLaughlin on 3rd June 1857 in Hampshire. They had four children: Edward Crofton Leigh McLaughlin; Hubert James McLaughlin; George Hall McLaughlin and Vivian Guy Ousley McLaughlin.
