Life story

Life story

Charles was born in Islington, Middlesex, the son of Theophilus and Hannah nee Edds or Edwards. Theophilus was the son of a Protestant dissenter and a solicitor's clerk. Charles was baptised at St Luke's church, Finsbury on 5th April 1868. The address on the register was 21 Upton Road, De Beauvoir Town. In the 1860's, the family lived with Thomas and Elizabeth, Hannah's parents. Charles was sent to Bancroft School in Mile End. The school was founded in 1737 with the Draper's Company as trustees. It was a charitable school with an almshouse attached. The school moved to Woodford Green in 1884 and the building was later demolished. By 1881, the family were living in Hornsey and Charles was working as a clerk for the Board of Trade. On 4th June 1887, Charles married Jeanette Carr at St John the Evangelist church, Hornsey. The couple had no children. They lived for a while in rooms in Hornsey and then moved to Stoke Newington, still living in rooms. By 1921, Charles and Jeanette were renting in Islington but by 1927, they had moved to Worthing. They first lived at 87 Rowlands Road and then 14 Milton Street. Charles often wrote to the local papers with comments about the parking in Montague Place or the lack of deckchairs on the promenade. He also wrote about his opposition to the felling of the trees in The Broadway, Brighton Road. Charles died in Worthing Hospital on 29th April 1936. Probate was granted on 10th June to Jeanette Nicole widow. Effects £485.
