Life story

Life story

Elizabeth was born in Aldbrough, Yorkshire, the daughter of Rev. George Holdsworth and his wife Albinia. Her father was the local vicar. Elizabeth was known as "Lilia". In 1864, she married Captain James John Dudgeon at St Bartholomew's Church, Sydenham. Their son Cecil was born in February 1865. The following year, the family were in Canada where a second son Frederick Annesley Dudgeon  was born in Fredericton, New Brunswick. James died in Fredericton on 3rd January 1867 and Elizabeth returned to England with her sons. On 21st December 1868, Elizabeth married Francis Charles Annesley at St Philip's church, Kensington. Francis was a widower aged 51. He was a retired Inspector General of Hospitals and a physician. Francis died at 20 Cambridge Road, Hastings on 22nd January 1889. For a while, Elizabeth lived in Tunbridge Wells but by 1914, she was living at "St Brelade's" in Wordsworth Road, Worthing. She died on 25th September 1919. Probate was granted on 8th January 1920 to Frederick Annesley Dudgeon CB Brigadier-General HM Army. Effects £521 4s 5d.
