Life story

Robert Thomas Brown was born in Luton Medway Kent. Ellen Elizabeth Burree was born in Battersea London in 1863. They appear to have been unmarried. Ellen has taken Roberts name. Robert has worked as a Bricklayer through his lifetime. From 1885 - 1888 Robert had two children, Robert Thomas 1885 and Ellen Elizabeth 1888. In November 1888 Robert appeared at The Old Bailey in London accused of Perjury committed on a summons of Bastardy. Robert was sentenced to 12 Months Hard labour. In January 1889, both of his children died along with another baby who was living in their house from Ellen's side of the family. From 1891 to 1899 Ellen gave birth to three Sons and a daughter 1891 Albert Edward Ernest (known as Alfred) 1892 George William (known as William) 1895 Henry Herbert (known as Herbert) 1899 Violet Lilian Primrose. The children were born in the Borough of London. Robert and Ellen lived at several addresses between the children's births and finally settled in Worthing living at Elm Grove for many years. By 1901 The family were living in Worthing at 44 Elm Grove in Worthing and Robert was employed as a bricklayer. All 4 children are living with them. In 1909 Son Alfred had died at the age of 18 and had been working as a butcher. In 1911 the family were still living at 44 Elm Grove and Robert is now an employer and in the trade of house building, his occupation is still a Bricklayer. Son Herbert (16) is working as an Assistant baker and Journeyman, Violet (11) is at school, William (18) is not living at home but is a footman at The Old House Bank House, Lewes. He worked for Francis Barry Whitfield and his son who were the Bankers in Lewes. In 1915 Robert and Ellen lose another son William aged 22 to Enteric Fever in France while serving in the Sussex Regiment. William was buried in France and commemorated on Roberts Gravestone. In 1922 Daughter Violet Marries in Worthing In 1928 on Nov 5th Wife Ellen dies aged 66 and the following year 1929 Robert dies aged 70. In his will he leaves his estate to Herbert and Violet his two remaining children and was living at 16 Elm Grove at the time of his death. Herbert is a butcher in Horsham in 1938 and dies aged 44 in Worthing. Violet was still living in Worthing in 1939 and residing at 16 Elm Grove. Ellen dies aged 89 in Brighton in November 1988.

By 1901 the family had moved to Private houses at Living at 44 Elm Grove, Worthing. Roberts Occupation was now a Stonemason. Ellen his wife and all four children were present on the Census.

1911 census: 

In 1911 the family were still living at 44 Elm Grove. Working again as a bricklayer and an employer, Robert 54, and Ellen 48, present on Census. Son Henry (Edwin) Herbert 16, an Assistant Baker/Journeyman. Violet 11, living at the address. George William absent on Census. Also on Census are the names of Thomas aged 3 years (dead) and Helen aged 1 Year (Dead) Birthplaces for both is Battersea, London
