Life story

Life story

Harold was the son and grandson of medical practitioners, but he did not follow their calling. His grandfather, William Henry, was a surgeon, and his father, Henry Charles, was a general medical practitioner. His mother, Kate Elizabeth nee Houlder, was the daughter of a ship owner, Alfred Houlder. In the 1901 Census Harold is described as an insurance broker's clerk, but on his marriage certificate in 1908 he is a "purser in a steamship company", perhaps influenced by his mother's brother. Barely more than six months after his marriage to Mabel Florence Rosen Merriman, Harold died of heart disease and was in a coma for 2 days. His home address was 24, High View Road in West Ealing but the place of his death was 14 Queen's Road, West Worthing.
