John Herbert Mathews Biography 1862 

John Herbert Mathews was born on 255h May 1862in East Ham, Essex to Charlotte Elizabeth Hodson 44yrs and farmer Thomas Mathews 46yrs.

At the age of 28 John was farming in Great Warley with his father. 2 years later he married Lydia Edith Wahab on 12 Jan 1893 at Paddington. Lydia was the daughter of a Lieutenant Colonel.

MARRIAGE MR. J. H. .MATHEWS AND MISS WAHAB. The marriage of Mr. John Herbert Mathews, younger son Mr. Thomas Mathews, of Worley Elms, with Miss Lydia Edith Wahab, second daughter of Col. Wahab, Brick House, Great Warley, took place Thursday at the church St. Mary .Magdalene, Paddington. There was very large attendance of relatives and friends. The bride was given away her cousin, Mr. Edward Wahab, of Loughton. The bridesmaids were Miss Kate Wahab, the bride’s sister, the Misses Tulloch (2|, and Miss Phillips, and Mr. Leonard Homer was best man. The bride wore a white satin dress with brocaded train falling from the shoulders, and a tulle veil and wreath, and she carried an exquisite bouquet. The ceremony was performed by the Bishop of Colchester assisted by the Rev. H. K. Hailey, and Rev Hollington. The service was choral. Alter the service reception Harewood Lodge, Upper Westbourne-terrace, was attended by over 100 guests. The presents were numerous and costly. Mr. and Mrs. Mathews left during the afternoon for Dover for the Continent.

Lydia and John had four children: Edith Doris, Thomas Hugh, Robert Arthur Cecil and John Geoffrey Wauchope Mathews. At first they farmed with John's father in Chigwell before moving to Park Crescent in Worthing by 1911.

Two of their sons: Thomas Hugh and Robert Arthur Cecil, died during their service in the great war. 

Thomas Hugh was a lieutenant in the East Lancashire Regiment and died on 2/11/1914.

John Herbert Mathews of Stanhope, Bulkington Avenue, Worthing, died at Amatola, Shakespeare Road, Worthing left effects of £16,485.16s.11d to John Geoffrey Wauchope Mathews Gentleman and David Christian Wardlaw and Cyril Laud Baddeley solicitors.

As published in in the West Sussex Gazetter, Mr. John Herbert Mathews, of Bulkington-avenue, left E16.485. He left £250 to hie gardener, Richard Shearman, and £25 each to his servants, Ellen Dickinson and George Simmonds, if respectively in his service at his death. Testator also left £2O to the Orphanage of the Sisters of Bethany, the House of Bethan, Springbonrne, Bournemouth.

Lieutenant Robert Arthur Cecil Mathews, 3rd Battalion East Lancashire Regiment. Died 18th October 1916.

Robert Arthur Cecil was born in 1896 at the Rectory in Great Warley, Essex to Rev John Herbert Mathews and his wife Lydia Edith Wahab. Lydia was the daughter of Colonel Wahab. Robert had an older sister, Edith Doris, and older brother, Thomas Hugh and a younger brother, John Geoffrey Wahab. He was educated at Miss Marshall’s School in Worthing and at Lancing College. A keen sportsman, he lost an eye in an accident but continued to play for the football team. He was a distinguished member of Lancing College football team and joined the school O.T.C. On the outbreak of war he joined the Royal Army Medical Corps enlisting in Portsmouth as Private 1692. He was trained at the 5th General Hospital Southsea. On 29th November 1914, following news of his brother, Thomas’ death in action, he enrolled in the East Lancashire Regiment. On the 18th March 1916 he went to France in the 1st Battalion and served until 18th October 1916 when he was killed in a murderous barrage attack at Les Boefs. Lieutenant R. Mathews is remembered at the Thiepval Memorial on Pier and Face 6C.

Lieutenant Thomas Hugh Mathews East Lancashire Regiment 1st Battalion. Died 2nd. November, 1914, Aged 19 years

Thomas Mathews was born in 1895 in Great Warley, Essex to farmer, John Herbert Mathews and his wife Lydia Edith Wahab. Lydia was the daughter of Colonel Wahab. Thomas had an older sister, Edith Doris, and two younger brothers, Robert Arthur Cecil and John Geoffrey Wahab. Thomas was educated at Rottingdean School, Brighton and Repton School, Burton on Trent, Derbyshire. After officer training at R.M.C. Sandhurst, Thomas was gazetted to 2nd Lieutenant with the "C" Company of the East Lancashire Regiment in 1913. On 4th August 1914 he was stationed at Colchester, then Harrow before being mobilised for war. On 22nd August he landed at Havre and engaged on the Western Front. Thomas was promoted to Lieutenant in September and sadly, after only weeks of action he was killed in the Hainaut region of Belgium on 2nd November 1914 Lieutenant T. H. Mathews is buried at Hainaut, Belgium in the Lancashire Cottage Cemetery, I.B.9. Thomas Hugh and his brother Lieutenant Robert, Arthur Cecil (also of the East Lancs) are remembered on their parents’ grave at Heene Cemetery E.B. Row 3 Plot 29.
