Life story

Philip Stanley Rowlett was born on 15th May 1883 in Cheshunt, Hertfordshire. He was the son of William George Rowlett, 31yrs, Stockbroker, and Ann, 26yrs, nee Owen, he had an older sister, Ethel Gladys, born 1882.

When Philip was 5yrs old his father died suddenly, aged just 38yrs, leaving estate of nearly £1.5m. (2021 value) ensuring the economic future of his family. At 17yrs, Philip followed his father's occupation and worked as a stockbroker's clerk but by 27yrs of age, he was living on private income. During the 1914 War, Philip was attached to the 78th Sussex VAD, (Voluntary Aid Detachment), and served as hospital orderly.

Philip was an accomplished pianist and musician and later in his life he moved, with his mother, to Worthing, Sussex, living at 3, Belsize Road, and took a position at the Music Salon of Mansfield and Son, Montague Street.

On 10th May 1932, Philip died suddenly at home, aged 48yrs. He was unmarried. No probate.

WORTHING GAZETTE -Wednesday 11th May 1932.

DEATH OF MR. P. S. ROWLETT.

The death occurred yesterday morning at his home, 3, Belsize Road, of Mr. Philip Stanley Rowlett. only son of Mrs. Rowlett of Belsize Road, and the late Mr. W. G. Rowlett. of Cheshunt. Mr. Rowlett was an accomplished musician, being exceptionally good as a pianist, and it was his love of music that largely influenced him some seven or eight years ago in his decision to join the staff of Messrs. Mansfield and Son at their Music Salon in Montague Street. The funeral is taking place to-morrow afternoon at Heene Cemetery, the interment being preceded by a service at St. Botolph's Church.

WORTHING GAZETTE – Saturday 14th May 1932.

The funeral took place at Heene Church on Thursday afternoon of Philip Stanley Rowlett, of 3, Belsize Road, who died on Tuesday. Mr Rowlett was keenly interested in Red Cross Work, and during the war was attached to the late 78th Sussex V.A.D. He was an orderly in the Cecil Hospital. A pianist of ability, he took up a position some years ago in Mansfield's Music Salon, where his likeable personality gained him many friends. The Rev. Canon C. J. Hollis, R D., Vicar of Holy Trinity, officiated at the service in the church and also at the graveside in Heene Cemetery. Beside the personal mourners there was a detachment representing the VAD.
