Life story

Life story

Mark William Walden (known as William) was born in Manchester on 22nd February 1863 at Salford Barracks. He was baptised on 19th April 1863 at St. Phillip, Salford. He was the son of Levi John Walden, 33yrs, a sergeant in the 45th Foot Regiment, stationed at Salford barracks. His mother was Elizabeth Kezia, 19yrs, nee Bilke. In October 1863, when Mark was only 6 months old, his father died, and in 1867 his mother remarried; his stepfather was David Taylor, a labourer, and over the following years Mark had 6 half-siblings.

He lived with his family in Alverstoke, Hampshire, at Railway Yard, where an interest in working for the railways appeared to have started

In 1881 when Mark was 18yrs old, his family were living in Anglesey Village, Alverstoke, Hampshire, he was employed as a bookshop messenger, but 10yrs later he was a railway fireman.

In early 1892 Mark married Sarah Porter, 36yrs, in Southampton, Hampshire, they had 2 daughters, Vera Ginerva, b.1893, and Beulah Jessie, b.1895.

By 1911, Mark and his family had moved to Guildford, Surrey, and Mark, now 48yrs old, was employed as a railway engine driver, a job he held until his retirement.

At some point after 1921, Mark and Sarah moved to Anglesey, 94, Ripley Road, Worthing, Sussex, where he died, on 19th August 1929, aged 66yrs. Probate was granted to his widow, effects £1631 14s 6d. Value 2023 £132,500.
