Life story

Matilda George was born on 28th October 1834 in Bethnal Green, Middlesex. She was the daughter of John George, 38yrs, Licensed Victualler, and Elizabeth, 33yrs, nee Pound, she had 2 siblings, Rosetta b.1826, and Frederick b.1832.

On 23rd June 1861 Matilda, 26yrs, married Handcock Tobias Thacker, 26yrs, a warehouseman, at St. Botolph, Aldersgate, in the City of London. Over the following years they had 11 children, 7 surviving into adulthood.

Handcock moved into the clothing trade and was a shirt-cutter and hosier until his retirement.

In 1911 Handcock and Matilda were living at Ingleside, Rowlands Road, Worthing, Sussex, with 4 of their unmarried daughters; Handcock died in May 1911, aged 76yrs, Matilda died in January 1919, aged 84yrs.
