Life story

Sarah Minter Claris was born in 1837 in Canterbury, Kent, she was the daughter of William Claris, 37yrs, Linen Draper, and Sarah Minter Hight, 31yrs, she had 4 brothers, William b.1828, George b.1830, John b.1833, and James b.1840.

In 1860, aged 23yrs, Sarah married Frank Tapley, 24yrs, in Canterbury, Kent, he was a fish salesman working at Billingsgate fish market where his father and grandfather had had a successful business for many years. In 1865 Frank was admitted into the Freedom of the City of London, by patrimony, in the Company of Fishmongers.

Sarah and Frank lived in Croydon for over 20yrs, they had no children. By 1891, Frank had retired, and the couple were living in Eastbourne, Sussex. In 1901 they had moved to Folkstone, Kent, andby 1911 they were living at 12, Milton Street, Worthing, Sussex. Sarah was widowed in 1913 when Frank died, aged 76yrs.

Sarah died, aged 85yrs, on 24th April 1923, at St. Aldhem's, Mount Herman Road, Woking, Surrey. Probate was granted to William Frank Selwyn Colburn, commercial traveller, effects, £1023 5s 7d. Value 2023 - £79,000.
