Life story

Life story

Thomas Harker was born on 16th October 1852, in Pateley Bridge, Yorkshire; he was the only child of Robert Harker, 31yrs, Grocer, and Ann, 29yrs, nee Grange. Thomas, aged 18yrs, became a medical student, living with, and being tutored by Edward Warburton, surgeon.

In 1884 Thomas, 32yrs, married Lucy Jane Bettison, 27yrs, in Bourne, Lincolnshire.

Lucy and Thomas had 2 sons, Robert Grange Harker, born in Lincolnshire in 1885, and George Cuthbert Warburton Harker, born in Stroud Green, Middlesex in 1890. The boys were educated at boarding schools and Lucy and Thomas had several addresses over the following years, 90 Ebury Street, Pimlico in London SW and Coronation House, Ilfracombe in Devon, and The Rowans Grand Avenue, Worthing, Sussex. By 1911, Thomas had retired, and they were living in Grand Avenue, Worthing, Sussex. Their younger son, George, was a student at Cambridge University, he graduated with a law degree and was articled in London in 1913. At the outbreak of war, he enlisted in the army, and in December 1917, aged 27yrs, he died from his wounds in France. He was awarded the Military Cross, For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty.

Lucy and Thomas were living in Bournemouth at this time, but they returned to Grand Avenue at some point where Thomas died, aged 72yrs, on 8th October 1925.

Probate was granted to George Alfred Bettinson, solicitor, and Rev. Robert G. Harker, Clerk, effects £71385 7s 5d. Value 2021 - £4.5m.
