Life story

Life story

Walter was born in the village of Colworth near Oving, Sussex, the son of William and Elizabeth Sarah nee Fogden. His father was a farm bailiff. Walter was baptised in Oving on 20th June 1858. He moved away from the village and worked as a tailor's assistant, eventually running his own business as a gent's outfitter. On 29th December 1879, Walter married Alice Jasper at St Nicholas church, Brighton. The couple settled in Chichester for a while before moving north to Rugby and then to Leamington Spa. They had seven children but sadly three died young. Lily May died in 1892 aged 4 and was buried at Leamington Priors, Albert Edmund died aged 2 in 1894 and Emily died aged only a few months in 1897. By 1901, the family had moved back to Sussex, living in Southwick. In 1910, they moved to Worthing, living at "Moorlands" in Belsize Road. Three of their children were still living at home in 1921. Marion, the eldest daughter had married Thomas George Williams, a council officer. Walter died suddenly on 5th October 1925. Probate was granted on 19th December to Ernest Percy Burnand gardener, Thomas George Williams clerk to District Council and Cyril Lawrence Burnand builder. Effects £10515 17s 1d.
