Life story

Life story

Charles was born in Stockton-on-Tees, the son of John and Elizabeth. He was baptised at Stockton on 30th December 1814. He trained as a tanner and leather merchant. On 10th December 1839, Charles married Elizabeth Cropton at Bishop Wearmouth, Durham. The couple lived in Sunderland where Charles ran his business. They had a daughter Mary born in 1840. By 1861, the family were living in Camberwell where Charles ran a small factory. Elizabeth died on 22nd December 1897. Her address was given as 83 Reginald Terrace, Leeds. Her probate mentions her as a wife of Charles but her daughter Mary was her executor. Charles visited Worthing in 1901, staying in Park Road. He died at the end of February 1903 and was buried at Heene on 26th of the month. The parish records show his address as Heene but at present it is not known where. No probate.
