Life story

Life story

George was born in Kingsland, Hackney the son of John and Elizabeth. He was baptised at St Peter's Church, Hackney on 22nd July 1849. George's father worked as an inspector for The New River Company which supplied clean water to London. John died in February 1860 and Elizabeth moved the family to Hoxton where she and her eldest daughter ran a tobacconist's shop. Two of Elizabeth's sons, Thomas and George found work with The New River Company as clerks. Elizabeth died in 1874. The following year, George married Emma Durrant in Islington. George was now a collector of water rates for The New River Co. The couple had two children, Cecile and Stephen. George had retired by 1911 and moved to Shoreham with Emma and Cecile. In 1917, they moved to Worthing, living at "Ingleside" in Heene Road. George died at Groombridge Nursing Home in Chaucer Road on 10th January 1920.
